This year’s Gold Star Fishing Trip at Sheppard’s Annex Recreation Area on Lake Texoma was a weekend filled with laughter, healing, and remembrance. Survivors from across the branches—five from the Army, two from the Air Force, and two from the Navy—came together with caring volunteers, fishing guides, and our partners at Veteran Fishing for Fun and the Gold Star Parents Retreat.

From the very start, the focus was on connection. Survivors had the chance to spend time on the water, share stories of their loved ones, and build new friendships with others who understand the journey of loss and resilience. The fishing trip, guided by Russell Duvak Guide Service, gave everyone a chance to relax, enjoy the outdoors, and simply have fun together.

Evenings were spent gathered around the table, sharing meals that meant more than just food. On Friday night, everyone enjoyed New York strip steaks, and on Saturday, a big brisket dinner brought the group together once again. These meals were made possible thanks to the generosity of Lance Lee Sparkman, who donated the steaks and briskets, and to David Derdine, who prepared and cooked the meals with great care. Their kindness and effort turned dinner into a highlight of the weekend.

We also want to recognize Terry Burgess, one of our great sponsors, whose support helped ensure this trip could take place. Along with others who gave their time and resources, Terry’s contribution made a meaningful impact on the entire experience.

The Gold Star Fishing Trip was more than just a weekend getaway—it was a time of healing, reflection, and joy. It gave survivors the space to honor their Soldier, Sailor, and Airman while also embracing life, friendship, and hope. We are deeply grateful to everyone—survivors, parents, sponsors, volunteers, and guides—who came together to make this gathering so special. We look forward to many more opportunities to connect, remember, and heal in the future.
